Why Your Gelcoat Needs Wax

Gelcoat is porous. Without a protective wax layer, UV rays, salt, and pollutants penetrate the surface and begin breaking down the gel's molecular structure — causing oxidation, color fading, and a chalky appearance that's expensive to restore.

Regular waxing seals the gelcoat, reflects UV, and creates a hydrophobic surface that repels salt and water. On a freshly buffed hull, water beads and rolls off cleanly — making your next wash faster and your hull easier to maintain.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I wax my boat's hull?

In Southwest Florida's intense UV environment, we recommend waxing every 3–6 months. Boats kept outdoors or in direct sun benefit from more frequent waxing to prevent gelcoat oxidation and fading.

What's the difference between a wax and a sealant?

Wax (usually carnauba-based) provides a warm, deep gloss and some UV protection but wears off faster. Sealant is a synthetic polymer that bonds to the surface and lasts longer. We offer both — and our Full Detail + Wax package uses a sealant over the wax for maximum durability.

Can waxing fix oxidation on my hull?

Light oxidation (chalky or dull appearance) can be significantly improved with our buffing process before wax application. Moderate to heavy oxidation may require a cutting compound and polish step before waxing — we'll assess and advise you before we start.

Do you machine buff or hand wax?

We use professional dual-action polishers for flat and curved hull sections, and hand-finish tight areas, corners, and near fittings. This gives you the best of both — speed, even application, and attention to detail where it matters.
